• Collarbone protection and visor release: a raised area designed with padding effectively reduces forces transmitted to the collarbone, while a patented visor release system ensures it comes off with the correct amount of pre-set force, regardless of the angle of impact.
• Revised lower shell: the lower shell volume in sizes M, L, XL, and 2XL has been increased by approximately 3% to make putting on and removing the helmet easier; this increase in volume has also improved impact management, now 44% below the normal speed threshold.
• ECE 22.06 approval: for the new ECE 22.06 standard, the SM5 achieves a normal-speed impact rating 44% better than the current 33%, as well as a linear impact score 32% better at low speed and 31% better at high speed than the current standard.
• Multi-density inner liner: ensures the right density in each area to enhance impact absorption.
• Redesigned chin bar profile: the base area has been specifically sculpted to create a raised relief section that frees the collarbone, with a new, softer EPS liner that extends beyond the helmet shell itself and is covered by a more flexible rubber compound, reducing the likelihood of collarbone injuries.
• Ventilation system: maximizes airflow and offers a high level of thermal exchange thanks to multiple air inlets and exhaust ports.
• Optimized weight: the ECE version of the SM5 helmet weighs 1,350 grams in medium size, and 1,420 grams in the ECE DOT version with visor.
• Visor design: developed to direct air towards the ports and enhance airflow.
• Available versions: the SM5 is available in 2 versions: ECE R 22.06 and ECE R 22.06/DOT.
• The internal and external surfaces are designed to minimize the effects of oblique impacts. To help counter and mitigate these rotational impact forces, Alpinestars has developed proprietary technology by creating a low-friction surface on the inside of the EPS liner. For the ECE 22.06 standard, which now includes the rotational oblique impact rating, the SM5 is 70% below the new regulation.
• The patented visor release system ensures the visor releases with the correct amount of predetermined force, regardless of the angle of impact.
• The lightweight outer shell is constructed from a technologically advanced impact-resistant thermoplastic in three anatomically shaped shell sizes, plus three individual sizes of EPS inner liner, with a combination of inner liner and cheek pads offering 6 unique sizes and ensuring the best fit and protection.
